WHAT’S HOT RIGHT NOW?

Understanding Alternative Packaging

Wine suppliers are thinking outside the box and consumers are responding – bag in box, canned wine, tetra pak and wine on tap. Add a little adventure to your life and try a glass of wine from some of these new and exciting packaging concepts. Enjoy!

BAG IN BOX

Talk about a true underdog story! Boxed wine has gotten a bad rap since its early beginnings. Previously associated with cheap, poor quality, boxed wine has risen from the shackles of shame and emerged as a bona fide champion of innovation, portability and environmentalism, not to mention quality and value. Modern day premium bag in box wines are typically packaged in eco-friendly, recyclable 3-liter installments, the equivalent to four 750ml bottles, and usually last up to 30 days after opening. Ideal for entertaining with large groups and for outdoor activities where glass bottles aren’t welcome, boxed wines are currently experiencing a huge surge in US sales, meaning that consumers have caught on to the premium boxed wine renaissance that continues to flourish across the country.

CANNED WINE

Following on the heels of the success of bag in box wines, canned wines are also gaining the attention of consumers nationwide. It’s essentially the single serve answer to the convenience benefits of boxed wine. Now, all of a sudden, folks on the go who want a single serving of wine don’t need a glass or a corkscrew, and don’t have to worry about the guilt of wasting a full bottle of wine. Canned wines are most often packaged in 250ml offerings, and just as boxed wine has made the leap to premium quality wine offerings, canned wine is following suit with quality producers canning desirable wines for the modern day wine enthusiast on the go. Whether you are headed to the park, lake or beach, convenience is king, and premium wine in a can is the solution you’ve been waiting for.

TETRA PAK

Want more than a single serve of wine in a convenient, portable package, but not as much as a 3-liter boxed wine? Grab a Tetra Pak! Packaged in carton-style packaging, similar to juice boxes or your favorite coconut water, Tetra Paks for wine come in 500ml packages and enjoy the same eco-friendly and portability benefits as boxed and canned wine. Look for them in the boxed wine section, cold box or in portable ice bins at your local wine or grocery store.

WINE ON TAP

The alternative package trend isn’t just happening on store shelves … it’s thriving in restaurants and bars too. Instead of stocking and storing dozens of bottles of wine, many restaurants are turning to wine on tap instead. Using similar technology used to keg beer, wineries are now kegging wines, resulting in fewer bottles and ultimately, less waste. Not to mention, the kegging technology guarantees a glass of fresh wine with each and every pour – a win for you! Keep the trend alive and order a glass of wine on tap next time it’s an option!
